Best Iphone games selected by me

Sorry for sensational title, but this reflects the content of the article, so why not?

Since Apple Iphone App Store launch I bought 8 games. I don’t know if this is a lot, there is probably people who bought all the games that are available on the App Store. On the other hand, I realized I already have good enough grasp on what it is to play games on Iphone, is it worth spending money and time on that.

So, here we go. Top 3 titles, starting from number 3.

    3. Super Monkey Ball (by Sega) (iTunes link)

It is third and not number one, because the game is too hard for me. Main difficulty being my inability to get a good feeling of how to drive the monkey around the place. Firstly, how exactly do you keep your Iphone?

If you keep it horizontally, ball is almost manageable, but this position is very uncomfortable if you lay in your bed or even sit in a comfy chair. As any Iphone user is aware, you keep your iphone tilted towards you and then the monkey always rolls into you. And if you tilt it in the opposite direction than there is difficulty to see what is going on the screen.

Then, the problem is making exact turns. Because you have to not just make wide turns, but very exact ones, especially when the road does not have walls and the monkey can easily roll off the road into the abyss.

But overall the game is still very enjoyable. The main argument here is how fine graphics actually are. Super Monkey Ball is easily best looking game on the App store. The picture of the game is really on the level of console gaming.

   2. De Blob (by THQ) (iTunes link)

What I like in gaming is not good graphics or even not just fun gameplay, but innovative concept of what you actually play in the game. This is probably the main reason why I don’t like race games very much. The concept of race games is so well-known and boring even before you start playing.

But in De Blob you paint buildings. And this is The Revolution, because bad guys want everything to be gray and same-looking. And you are De Blob, good guy looking like a ball of mud that rolls around, picks colors in some secret corners (like buying dope in a sense) and roll into the buildings that result in nicely colored building instead of gray ones.

And there is police too. They drive around and look for you. They want you gray too, they take away color from you and make you go around and turn all the buildings into gray ones again. But they will lose, we all believe in that, don’t we?

   1. Critter Crunch (by Capibara Games) (iTunes link)

What De Blob still lacks is deeper tactical level of gameplay. I haven’t invented any particular tactics in De Blob of how to roll around more efficiently and kick bad guys’ ass more strongly.

While in Critter Crunch this tactical level is incomparably more enjoyable. Firstly, what is principal tactics of this game? To get critters off as soon as possible or to move them around into bigger groups and then crunch them?

The concept of the game is innovative too. There is like 7 (just a guess) types of critters and they all behave in different ways and you have to work out a way to get them all crunched. And some of them is not actually crunchable at all. Like stone walls, which your just have to make drop down and brake into million pieces. And some of them are poisonous, you better don’t crunch them at all …

And the time limits. Everything has to be done very quickly, this is not puzzle, this is arcade. Very little time and pretty deep tactical level. Very nice and for me obviously winning combination.
